Fracaso - Demo 2011 Cassette - IFB051

Fracaso is from Caracas Venezuela and rips through 7 tracks of raw anarcho-punk seething with frustration. Simple pounding riffs pummel away with a classic sound, backed up with mostly D-beat drumming and reverbed out vocals. Their song "Paranoia" is an absolute classic, bringing to mind Cervix and Nerveskade at the same time. Released in Venezuela by Cabeza de Vaca Records, I liked it so much I asked to do a US version. These are $3 in an order or $4.50ppd on their own.

Planks / Lentic Waters - split LP - IFB052

A constellation of two German monoliths - both unique in what they do – still a harmonizing team. The A side shows Planks taking yet another step away from their Hardcore roots. In the vein of their last output The Darkest Of Grays, they deliver their unique blend of gloomy, melody ridden, downtuned heaviness that incooperate aspects of Doom, Black Metal and Dark Wave - but this time they even go one step further and take on Grunge methodologies in Leave And Never Come Back. All they did on their last records finds its way into these three tracks but everything seems more organized, filtered, more mature and in better sound.

Lentic Waters' B side of the split delivers the first three new songs after their impressive first s/t LP. The still fairly new band took the time on the road during the weeks of tours they spent, to distinguish what they are capable of and what they do best. Those tracks bring their facets of grinding emoviolence, double-bass frenzy and super catchy melodies. Also the sound of the recording improved and therefore offers the listener a better inside into what this band is able to. Three string instruments that play three different things at the same time just to have one big harmony in the end. Melodies shattered by ravishing outbursts to flow into massive, epic endings. It should be interesting to see how much more this band has to offer in the future seeing the transition they undertook in such short time. This is a split release with React with Protest and Apocaplexy. These are $10 in an order or $13ppd on their own.

Rotting Palms hail from the depths of Tampa, keeping true to that cities storied past of heavy and mean hardcore. These young punks take a powerful, plodding approach, focusing on bludgeoning riffs and pounding drums with vocals in the His Hero is Gone school. This is the kind of crust influenced heavy hardcore that makes me close my eyes and bob my head with clenched fists. The package is screenprinted on waste paper. These are $4 in an order or $6ppd on their own.

US vs. Germany on this massive split. I have to say that Cloud Rat is the best US hardcore band going - their live set should not be missed as they deliver yet another round of venomous grinding hardcore filled with palpable anger and emotion. They just keep getting better and if you haven't heard any of their stuff before, you are missing out big time. Republic of Dreams is from Germany and rip through wild bursts of emo-violence with all the swirling riffs and high end chords you'd expect from these veterans of Louise Cyphre and Resurrectionists. This is chaos done to perfection, and the dark, long samples add to the feeling of tension. This has a lyrics booklet and a cover screen printed on recycled paper. This is a split release with React with Protest, Moment of Collapse, and 50 Year Storm. These are $10 in an order or $13ppd on their own.

Michigan's Old Soul effortlessly combine genres to put forth a seriously epic set of screamed hardcore.  Dark atmospheric parts and haunting post rock quickly devolve into heavy blasting hardcore, often infused with a distinct black metal element.  Harsh, throat shredding screams complement this perfectly.  These are on pink or purple marble vinyl in a thick inner sleeve with 4 screen prints.  A wraparound cover and a big art and lyrics booklet round it out.  Michigan wins again.  This is a split release with Eastrain and Dingleberry Records.  They are $10 in an order or $13ppd on their own.

From Fort Wayne IN, Parasitic Twins play a style of HC rooted in the Black Flag/Poison Idea style with plenty of weird riffings going on - not at all run of the mill HC riffs. The vocals on top are tough as fuck with tons of anger as well as a fun mocking tone. Nate might be more pissed at our culture than I am. This is really, really good and is definitely worth supporting.  These are a split release with Reality is a Cult and Black Heart Mountain.  They are $4 in an order or $6.50ppd alone.

This beast pummels away with hideous grinding HC filth and ups the ante of all their previous work. There's even some haunting singing (granted, it devolves into venomous fury but it's there and is really cool) and some dark instrumental work, diversifying the sound on the LP. This record is housed in another inside out used record sleeve to conserve resources and is screenprinted and re-glued. That makes it more punk and less hip which rules. Anyway, it's also a split release with Halo of Flies in the US and in Europe it will be released by React With Protest and 7 Degrees Records - Europeans check those labels.  These are $9 in an order or $12ppd alone.

Tampa's Recreant is a hardworking band with this, their first vinyl release. Recreant seamlessly blends a base of dark HC/crust with harsh late 90's style screamo. It has dark emotional power but never cease pounding with crushing heaviness and hints of metal from time to time. What really makes this band stand out is the violin work which really drives it along. This is not just the token violin note here and there to give it a an epic sound - this is a substantive addition to the sound and really adds power. The vocals are duel male/female harsh screams and totally make this perfect for me. These are screenprinted on inside out used record jackets to reduce resource use. This is a split release with IFB, Dingleberry, All We Know, and Panda Banda.  These are $9 in an order or $12ppd on their own.

Tampa FL's Landbridge knows how to put it all together to create dark melodic crust worth remembering. They've listened to enough Ekkaia, Alpinist, Requiem and the like and on this little 4 song platter they drop the gamut on us - everything from galloping D-Beat, ripping HC, charging crust riffs, leads, pounding beat downs, and did I mention pick slides? Male and female vocals dropping passionate, relevant lyrics round it all out. The jacket is screen printed on hand cut waste paper to reduce resource use and its a split label effort with IFB, All We Know, Get Better, and Fill The Void.  These are $4 in an order or $6.50ppd on their own.

Remek hail from the Czech Republic and deliver 4 tracks of harsh, powerful emo.  Gruff vocals complement the chaos as they perfectly blend the swirly emo chaos sound with heavier hardcore.  Paper Plane Crash fly in from Slovenia and drop 5 bombs of raw and catchy driving emo with vocals reminiscent of Former Members of Alfonsin.  Both bands have sincere and meaningful lyrics with additional writings as well in a large booklet.  The covers are painted, then screenprinted and look amazing.  Both of these bands are serious about DIY and building an alternative culture and definitely keep my faith in punk alive!  This release is a cooperation between 11 labels.  They are $10 in an order or $13ppd alone.

This is a one sided LP from Boston's finest powerviolent hardcore outfit.  This one just hits you in all the right places, dropping ripping HC riffs in between crushing plods, only to then whip you into shape with a riff perfect in its ability to bring you back to your Neanderthal genetic past and just wreck things in a furious frenzy.  All this mess is fronted with Krystina's venomous vocals which are scathing critiques all backed up with nice explanations on the insert.  Just like it should be.  The packaging features great artwork from Ryan and extensive screenprinting and stamping work.  This is a split release with Not Normal (Chicago) and Parade of Spectres (UK).  These are $9 in an order or $12ppd on their own.

This long awaited release finally sees the light of day.  Two European emo powerhouses flail away on both sides.  Captain YSIS plays emo in the more 90's pleading, driving, yet on the verge of falling apart style that has always been a key to my musical heart.  Black Everest take a dose of screamo but bring it a lot of heavier influences as well, going for a more direct knock-out blow.  It comes housed in an absolutely gorgeous gatefold jacket.  This is a split release with 50 Year Storm, Moment of Collapse, and Win Htein.  These are $12 in an order or $15ppd alone.  I only have 30 copies so don't wait super long.

Alright y'all, so you know that 90's emo is where my heart lies, but I'm old and have most of those records by now and rely on the odd band to actually nail that sound to continue to justify my existence.  Well, count me in for a few more years cause this Alabama crew has dropped a true gem on us.  This has it all - the slight noisiness, vocals right on the verge of screaming and yelling that sound like they're coming from the next room, and the occasional nod to hardcore ala Assfactor 4, and just the right amount of chaos without getting noodly.  Honestly, if you were at all perked when I said 90's emo, this is for you.  These are $4 in an order or $6.50ppd all alone.  Split release with House of Love and Spring Street records.

Sadly, these Londoners have already called it quits, but this is one of those releases like the Fracaso demo where I heard it and just had to make a US edition - sometimes these things can't be helped.  This comes from members of diverse bands like Lich and Good Throb and play a perfectly fucked up style of punk.  The comparison that I have to make is with the Death Wish Kids in the sense that the production value is shit yet perfect, and everything has this total disregard for human life yet manages to pull off the best sound you've heard.  These pro made tapes are packaged in legit old UK tourist postcards - each is different (read: cool but without collector limited shit, like yours is unique but not more valuable than another, like how people should be).  These are $4 in an order or $6.50ppd on their lonesome.

The Elsinores - Dreams of Youth LP - IFB067

First full length by these Lexington KY guys.  This record is a perfect exploration of post punk and garage pop but infused with plenty of punk energy and urgency.  The packaging is made of inside out used/screenprinted record jackets, with some copies printed on recycled stock paper.  These are $9 in an order of $12.50ppd on their lonesome.  This is a split release with Karmic Swamp, Human Crush, Hip Kid, and Dead Tank. The review below says it better than I can -

“There’s something going on here. When an album starts off with “Unlearn,” a frantic, frenzied burst of a song that’s only one repeated line before immolating itself, just like Wire at their best, followed by “Cult Of Youth,” boasting an epic college rock hook caked in infinite reverb and smeared tones, the mind starts picking up sonic tracks and traces. Lexington, Kentucky’s Elsinores remind me of many things, but lack the patchwork quilt musical assemblage quality that so many younger band fall prey to. Nothing is given away.

“Dreams Of Youth” is a dark album, let’s be clear. Goth goes to the garage maybe? I don’t want to sound too glib, because this is a damn fine album. Listen for whispers of Pixies, the Wipers, Samhain, Lost Sounds, Echo And The Bunnymen, and the Damned. I’m particularly taken by the inventive combinations deep within Elsinores’ musical DNA. A full-throated vocal delivery that calls to mind Dave Vanian, a sonic palette of guitar sounds blurred and obscured by effects, and bass/drums that are whip smart and solid, rumbling foundation.

“Dreams Of Youth” is about hitting back against despair, even though in the back of your mind you know that it’s going to end in tears.”

Another band that needs no introduction to these esteemed readers - Bloomington's Rat Storm play ripping hc/punk that hits you in all the spots that want that, all the while upping the level in terms of being a meaningful use of resources.  Read these lyrics and get to know the art - check out Kathe Kollwitz - my favorite artist.  If you're at all interested in blistering punk that is actually saying something relevant, Rat Storm is carrying the banner in fine form, plus they know southern hospitality despite probably being half frozen as I type.  It's on random colored vinyl so you get cool colors with no collector bullshit!  It's a co-release with Profane Existence and Reality is a Cult.  These are $4 on their own or $6.50ppd alone.

South Carolina has always been a breeding ground for unique sounding punk, and TETOG give us something really special here.  Take a blackened crust base but inform it through a lens of harsh emo, and combine it with a kind of moody oppressive ambience, and you can start to imagine it.  The final track is a massive building epic - dark melody with harsh vocals throughout - this stuff rules.  It's a split release with All We Know, Get Better, and Anti-Corp Records.  These are $4 in an order or $6.50ppd on their own.

Resurrectionists/Gentle Art of Chokin' - split LP - IFB070

Neither of these bands needs much introduction as I've done releases for both in the past, but I'll be damned if they're not in top form here.  Resurrectionists are as swirly and chaotic as ever, bludgeoning you with hideous grind filth that manages to somehow maintain that special something that makes you raise both arms and bathe in the glory of all things punk.  Gentle Art of Chokin' managed to find a way to play even faster and devise new ways to melt human skin, slowing down only to stir the pot of your stinking melted innards.  This reminds you that you are a filthy mammal and punishment is what you deserve.  Meaningful powerful lyrics seal the deal.  This beast is housed in a terrifying gatefold cover, and oh yeah, the labels are switched but since we're punks and don't give a shit we're rolling with it rather than wasting more plastic.  This was co-released with React With Protest and Moment of Collapse.  These are $11 in an order or $14ppd alone.
